Chery was founded in 1997, the complete name of the company is SAIC Cherry. The initial investment is 1.725 billion yuan, (either 175.2 million euros). The factory occupies a surface of 50.000 m2, the output is of 300.000 engines and 100.000 vehicles per year. Currently the capacity is set to 150.000 vehicles per year. The factory of vehicles is completely integrated, (workshop of welding, stamping, painting, assembly). The factory is certified ISO9001 in 2001, and ISO/TS16949 in 2002.As of the first year of production, Chery carried out three first in China, first certified company ISO/TS16949, first car making a success of the test of side shock, first electric prototype vehicle. Chery is known for its cars at low prices. Currently, Chery has developped with the assistance of AVL a complete range of engines. Chery continues the development of hybrid cars and electric cars. In addition, Chery has its own sequential gear box.
Chery is a very active manufacturer, and tied international partnerships with rekowned foreign carmakers, with FIAT to manufacture the Esparto 159, Chrysler to manufacture a small car, with a company in Uruguay to manufacture the cross-country ones. Lately it is with a israeli company that Chery intends to increase its outputs.

Partnerships with lots of carmakers

Chery has just signed with FIAT the creation of a joint venture in the town of Wuhu in August 2007. Via this agreement, Chery will provide to FIAT 100.000 engines per year. The joint-venture would manufacture thus 175.000 cars of model FIAT, Alfa Romeo and Chery, these models would be intended for export.Previously Chery had made an agreement with Chrysler for the manufacture of cars compact. At the end of 2006, Chery started a project of establishment in Uruguay, with an Argentinian partner (Socma Group), the JV is called Chery Mercosur, the initial investment rose to 100 million dollars. Chery owns 51% of the JV, this company will draw part of the Common Market E South America (Mercosur). The 2 models concerned with the assembly are the QQ and Tiggo (segment C). The factory which is in Montevideo, manufactured FIAT and Peugeot in the Nineties.
In 2006, encouraged by the success of its sales in Russia, Chery signed a contract with Avtotor to manufacture the Tiggo. The investment amounts to 200 million dollars. Russia seems to be a promising market not only for Chery but also for the other Chinese manufacturers.
